Hydrogen Transport in Russia: From Development to Practical Application
Hydrogen technologies in Russia are expanding into new transport segments. In 2026, the assembly of two prototype trainsets of Russia’s first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train began. The trains are designed for operation on non-electrified railway sections on Sakhalin Island (Source: TMH). The three-car trainset will be capable of travelling up to 435 km without refuelling and carrying more than 850 passengers (Source: Office of the Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative in the Far Eastern Federal District).

Hydrogen technologies are also advancing in the heavy-duty industrial transport segment. In 2026, H2 Engineering presented a working prototype of a 220-tonne mining dump truck equipped with a hybrid power system exceeding 2 MW (The Hydrogen BELAZ project has been under development since 2025 with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and Rostec State Corporation). More than 20 Russian and Belarusian manufacturers of equipment and components are involved in the project, with trials under real-world mining conditions scheduled to begin in 2027 (Source: Neftegaz.RU).

The prospects for the further development of hydrogen transport, the expansion of its applications, and the introduction of new technological solutions will be addressed as part of a broader professional discussion at the technology session “Hydrogen in Motion: Best Practices in Hydrogen Transportation” of the International Hydrogen Conference.

The Conference will take place on 29–30 October at the World Trade Center Moscow (12 Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment, Moscow).

The session will bring together industry professionals to discuss experience in hydrogen transport development, promising technologies, and practical approaches to implementing projects in this field.

We look forward to welcoming you and your colleagues to the Conference!
